Fusion, Maya, Substance 3D Painter

Fire Hydrant Asset

Scroll

This asset is my final project in my 3D modeling class. We were given a few images to base the model off of, and no further instructions. The goal was to match the reference images as close as possible.

Fusion exports models very messily, so I brought it into Maya for retopology. I used Quad Draw to re-make the model, this time with cleaner UVs and less polygons. I unwrapped the model, making sure to straighten any UVs I could.

Thanks to the retopology I did, the model was now much easier to texture and took up less space. However, it was also much more jagged and rough. This would be fixed in Substance Painter.

I began the process in Fusion, as I find it easy for industrial / machined assets. It was very rudimentary, but as I learned more and more about the program, the hydrant began to take shape.

After using the Fusion model (high poly) to bake curves onto the Maya model (low poly), I began texturing. I used a variety of procedural masks and hand painting to achieve the look I was going for, and finished with a beautiful low poly asset.
